Cocoa beans in East Sepik are grown in distinct regions, each contributing its own terroir — the unique characteristics imparted by the soil, climate, and farming practices. The beans are harvested in small batches, ensuring that the cocoa from each area has a unique flavor profile. Farmers handpick ripe cocoa pods, and after harvesting, the beans are extracted, fermented, and sun-dried. This careful, small-scale process guarantees the highest quality and maintains the natural essence of the local environment, which is crucial for the single-origin appeal of PNG Cocoa.
Special thanks to Malum Nalu for capturing this insightful video from March 2021, showcasing East Sepik’s rise as Papua New Guinea’s top cocoa-producing region. Thanks also to Daryll Worimo, PNG Cocoa Board Regional Manager, for highlighting the steady annual growth of 2,000 metric tonnes since 2013.
